Tony Sio

Head of Regulatory Strategy and Innovation, Nasdaq

Tony Sio is Head of Regulatory Strategy and Innovation at Nasdaq’s Anti-Financial Crime division. Nasdaq AFC provides AML, Surveillance, and Anti-Fraud tools for regulators, venues, banks, and market participants globally. Tony defines regulatory strategy for the division and ensures its service offerings are ahead of both regulatory and technology trends.

Prior to this role Tony was Head of Marketplace Regulatory Technology, this includes overall responsibility for the Nasdaq Market Surveillance (SMARTS) solution which is used by over 50 marketplaces and 17 regulators globally. His team uses the latest in technology to provide surveillance and regulatory solutions for all tradeable products in the world’s largest markets.

Tony brings over 20 years’ experience implementing or advising upon financial technology and surveillance practices at exchanges and regulators across USA, Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. Tony has run teams performing major technology changes at over a dozen marketplaces as well as lecturing and advisory roles along the intersection of regulatory practices and financial technology.

Tony has a background in financial market research with the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Center. His research focused on market microstructure and market integrity. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Finance. Tony has a history of combining research with new tools, such as machine learning, to develop novel new approaches to protecting markets, and more recently for digital assets.
