After graduating in law from Queensland University of Technology in 1983, Rupert spent the first period of his career as a litigator. From there he worked for 13 years at UBS in a number of different roles, ranging from front office structuring, legal and risk manager to board member. Immediately prior to joining HSBC he was a chief adviser to the Australian treasury in its financial services division. In December 2016, Rupert was appointed Chief Control Officer, Global Banking and Markets. In this role Rupert is responsible for running the 1st line control function across the non-financial risk portfolio for all four GBM business lines – Global Markets, Global Banking, HSBC Securities Services and Global Liquidity and Cash Management. This includes Risk Governance; Risk Assessment; Risk Processes and Controls; and Financial Crime Risk. Since the beginning of 2018, Rupert has also led on the GBM Conduct programme globally and in each of four regions across 13 capabilities.
