Jay Michals
An energy industry professional with over 20 years in trading, asset management and compliance roles. For the past 6 plus years he has led his respective compliance team function in the trade/transaction surveillance space. In four plus years at Calpine looking at power and natural gas transactions he was the lead analyst and manager in the development of bespoke compliance systems as it related to exchange and OTC transaction review, coordinating software developers with UI developers, and directing testing and refining of metrics. This was followed by 2 ½ years of working with the NASDAQ Smarts compliance tools while with Motiva Enterprises with a focus on crude, refined products and chemical/petro chem trade surveillance. In his current role he is the Americas lead in compliance for Mercuria Energy America. His team currently works with K3/Broadpeak trade surveillance analytics is reviewing other fit for purpose tools in energy, environmental, metals, and agricultural products. Jay’s trading and asset management background includes optimization of NG power plants, virtual power trading, strategic planning, and ISO committee engagement. In the regulatory environment he has worked directly with ISO’s and Market Monitors, Exchanges, FERC, CFTC, as well as various foreign agencies or authorities.
