No matter what the subject, attendees returned again and again to one theme: “Everything is regulatory. It’s supposed to be all about fighting financial crime, protecting institutions, but day-to-day it's about meeting regulatory expectations.” Cynics may say that banks always complain about regulation, but that isn’t true. Banks understand the pressures that regulators are under and do not simply wish regulation away. However, on both sides of the pond, when it comes to financial crime, banks agree: the current regulatory environment is out of date and counterproductive.
